Saturday Special: In conversation with Darlings

A daring alternative sound has hit the music scene originating from the indie band, Darlings. A four-membered band commending from London, UK.  Our reporter Poppy Huggett caught up with Lead Singer Steve Marriott and Bass Player Bailey Burnett on all things “Rock n Roll”.

Darlings radiate a cool and crisp alternative sound to the Rock ‘n’ Roll prospect. Although only recently beginning their musical career, Darlings’ successful tune “Situation” received over 10,000 streams and aired on ITV’S ‘This Morning’.

The edgy band has also featured on gigs alongside legendary figures Carl Barat of The Libertines and Johnny Lloyd of Tribes.

When asked how they defined their sound, Steve said: “Everything is from my own experience so I’d like to say that they’re relatable to the listeners in an oxymoron theme that can suit the tone to either mood they’re in”

Lead singer Steve is no stranger to Rock n Roll, as his legendary uncle Steve Marriott, frontman guitarist of Small Faces and Humble Pie inspired the young artist to pursue his musical career.

When considering the advice Darlings have previously received, Bailey said: “Steve once told me this advice that he heard from his uncle, if you ain’t nervous, give up”. He added, “I think that is so true, we’re all nervous yet so excited before a show”.

From the analgesic funk opening to the thriving guitar hooks, Darlings’ latest and greatest single ‘Why?’ certainly expresses the talent of the unorthodox band.

“We had Why? banked for a while and had it planned out in my head how I wanted it to sound, but when I took it to the boys the tempo and aggression was altered.” Steve said whilst sharing the creative process behind their new track. Marriott added: “I took it to Bailey and we both heard it differently, that slow at the start wasn’t originally there, it came in as that’s what Bailey heard”.

Darlings have felt the impact of COVID-19, along with the rest of the world. Bailey shared his experience of the pandemic: “It’s heartbreaking, we started as a band about 4 months before the pandemic kicked off, fans were coming to all our shows and we had label interest. Burnett added: “Then it all came to a halt”.

That didn’t stop the talented quadruple as they have continued to produce incredible music and have received a tremendous amount of support through social media.

When chatting about the exciting future of the band, Bailey said: “We’ve got our online stream on hotvox, new tunes and we’ve got some really exciting shows lined up for the rest of the year!”
