Saturday Special: In Conversation with Lock-In

Lock-In is a British indie-pop band consisting of five young guys with talented melodious skills. Poppy Huggett caught up with the frontman of the band Benjy ahead of their newest release GET OVER IT, to discuss all things ‘Lock-In’.

Sam, Angus, and Benjy began their Sixth Form playing for their friends. But when did they decided to take it more seriously? Benjy the frontman of the group said that they “met Paddy at the Community Festival and later formed the group with Ollie”( the drummer) after a friend introduced them. The love from their fans and encouragement from their friends made them take this seriously.

When asked how did the name, Lock-In came into being, Benjy expressed how it came naturally to the band. ” we knew we wanted to write a load before we started gigging and recording. When we met at our local pub the Queens, there was a Lock-In so we thought it would be fitting”, said Benjy.

One can describe the music of this band as a mix between indie rock and pop. ” We generate our sound, and anyone can judge what they think it is”, commented Benjy when asked to describe how people should perceive the music that they create.

He further discussed the band’s greatest inspirations including names like, “Angus loves Foals, Sam loves AM, Ollie Hippo Campus, and so on”. He added, “we all have common interests in Blossoms and Sticky Fingers, but I wouldn’t say we’re exactly like them”.

The Band spent time in the lockdown creating melodies and new tunes. Benjy said that the time “gave us a huge chance to write some tunes, find our sound, get in the studio, and release some cool covers on Instagram.” However, it also had a huge negative effect as they couldn’t hold live gigs and concerts to connect with fans.

The Band looks forward to better days when they can go back performing for their fans. They want to make tunes that people can relate to. He said, “We just want to suit them in that moment of time!”

Benjy also advised the aspiring musicians to write whatever they want to write about. “If you write what you enjoy writing, then they’ll be bangers. On top of that, write, write, write. The more you have the more chance there’s a bop in there”, said Benjy.

Lock- In is looking forward to announcing new releases and gigging sessions this year. Their two music knockouts ‘Rosy Cheeks’ and ‘Teenager’ are available on music streaming sites now. Their latest hit GET OVER IT is available from January 8th.
