South Korean Kim Jong-yang has been elected by Interpol as its president, beating Russia’s Alexander Prokopchuk.
Mr Kim was chosen by Interpol’s 194 member states in Dubai at the meeting of its annual congress. The Interpol (International Criminal Police Organisation) culminates police forces from 194 countries, to share intelligence and help searches for missing or wanted people.
Mr Kim, aged 57, is a former South Korean police officer. Previously, he was senior vice-president of Interpol.
His opponent, Mr Prokopcuk, was widely tipped to win. But there was concern that he may use this new role to hit back at critics of President Putin.
Moscow commented that Mr Prokopchuk would carry on serving as vice-president of Interpol to strengthen their “position in the international police community”.
