Rich Getting Richer While Poor Remain Vulnerable

One of the recent studies by Oxfam revealed that the inequality gap is continuing to widen across the globe. The rich are getting richer and the poor remain vulnerable to global crises.

The studies conducted by Oxfam revealed the following:

  • According to Oxfam the combined wealth of the world’s top richest people have risen from $400 billion to $560 billion during this pandemic.
  • The charity claimed that this amount would be enough to solve the world’s problems.
  • It can help to provide vaccines for all and prevent the world from falling into poverty.
  • Because of this, they have urged the government to consider high taxes for the billionaires.
  • The report came after the World leaders gathered for the World Economic Forum’s meeting this year which took place virtually.
  • Every year Oxfam publishes highlights evidence that the rich are getting richer while the poor remain equally if not more vulnerable than before.
  • Results also revealed that the total wealth of billionaires worldwide hit $11.95 trillion last December which is equivalent to the recovery spending of all the G20 governments put together.
  • The 10 richest people, whose fortunes have risen significantly since last May are Amazon’s founder Jeff Bezos, Facebook founder, Mark Zuckerberg, and Tesla’s Elon Musk amongst a few others.
  • The charity organization revealed that this was due to rebounding markets causing the inequality gap to widen.
  • Their survey has also shown that people desperately wish to see the world leaders tackle the inequality and work towards bridging the gaps.

This situation is “unacceptable and unsustainable”, say Oxfam representatives. The report has highlighted “a system that is failing the millions of hardworking people on poverty wages”.
