Review of HOYs

Last year, I had the privilege of reviewing the Horse Of The Year Show for the first time and having enjoyed the experience immensely, I looked forward to returning in 2022. It was great to be back this year, first of all, for Friday evening and then for a full day on Saturday. As always, there was a warm welcome from the Grandstand Media team, whose efficient organisation of the proceedings and friendly hospitality are such an important part of the event.

Friday evening consisted of a mixture of showjumping, championships, scurry racing and pony games, along with an elegant and exciting display. It was an enjoyable variety and set the scene for a full day of entertainment on Saturday. It was interesting to begin the day with a wander around the retail area (something which I hadn’t done before)and it was a real eye-opener to see so many different aspects of the equestrian world.

Horse of the year show 2022

After lunch, the day’s programme began in earnest and once again, it was great to see an eclectic mix of showjumping (both national and international), scurry racing, Pony Club games, displays, championships and the grand finale of the evening, the Puissance. Having experienced the show for the first time last year, it was still amazing to see this thrilling event in which the wall was cleared at a height of just over 7ft 2 ins, earning a well-deserved standing ovation.

As always, the organisation of the event was of the highest quality and thanks are due to Grandstand Media for the excellent job that they do in every aspect of this. The commentary was very listenable and informative and we enjoyed our usual singalong, with waving torches of mobile phones lighting up the arena. My wife (whose greater knowledge of equestrian sport I rely upon on this occasion) and I thoroughly enjoyed the event and look forward to another great show in 2023.
