Review: 'BAR HUMBUG!' – Once Upon A Time in Birmingham

By Shona Carter
Once Upon A Time is really the place to go this season. I couldn’t ask for a much better space, designed by Sam Bompas and Harry Parr, better known as Bompas & Parr.
Located outside the Bullring, on the site of the old Jamie’s Italian (between Browns and Wagamamas) 88,000 fairy lights filled the Christmas Pop Up which reminded me of Santa’s Grotto with a twist. If you’re looking for a great atmosphere, chilled vibes and great cocktails, well, this is the place to be.

The Christmas feel is warmly felt with their Festive Tea. Unlike your traditional Christmas favourites, this was surprisingly different. I was kindly served their Festive Tea, all of which is Vegan friendly. Stuffing Croquets, Spiced Wellington, Meringue covered Mini Mince pies, Jelly, and last but not least, a Vanilla and Chocolate Sundae!

I’m not usually a stuffing person but the Stuffing Croquettes were nicely fried with a chestnut seasoned centre, and served with a touch of cranberry and a cranberry catsup. The cranberry made this dish even more delectable.
My favourite dessert if I must say so myself was the Vanilla and Chocolate Sundae. So delectable, I ate every last drop!

The shabby chic interior and furniture compliments the Christmas décor perfectly, making it comfy yet ‘instagramable’.

If you fancy a bit more than chilling then Once Upon A Time certainly have you covered with a DJ and dance floor.

This pop up space is free to enter. So whether you’re popping in after you’ve explored the wonderful German Market or going for your infamous pre-drinks, Once Upon will certainly be a great way to start or finish any night.
