Protests in Indonesia’s Papua: 26 Killed & 70 Injured

Atleast 26 people death and more than 70 injured when protests by hundreds of people took place in Wamena in Papua province of Indonesia, following a rumor that a teacher insulted an indigenous student.

Among the victim atleast three people were shot by the police and some victims burned alive in buildings set ablaze by protesters.

Rudolf Alberth Rodja, police chief of papua said that the protestors attacked the local government buildings, shops, homes and also set fire to several vehicle on the roads which were leading to the district chief’s office.

In a separate incident, four individuals were killed, including a military official, and a few others harmed when Indonesian security powers opened flame on understudies following a dissent about bigotry at a college in Jayapura on Monday.

Hundreds of students had gathered at Cenderawasih University early on Monday morning but were ordered by the authorities to disperse.

“Suddenly the police started to run fast towards the mass of students and I could see they were shooting at them. Shots were fired into the air and towards the students and the police also fired tear gas,” said the eyewitness.

According to the authorities, Most victims in Wamena were non-Papuans. A large portion of the ongoing conflicts have been between rebel dissenters and Indonesian security powers.

However, the protest came days after Indonesian authorities managed to get the province under control after weeks of violent demonstrations.
