Protests as Italy Restricted Same-sex Parent’s Rights

In 2016, Italy approved same-sex civil unions. But it did not permit homosexual couples to adopt.

On Saturday, hundreds of people protested in Milan against moves taken by Italy’s new right-wing administration to limit the rights of same-sex parents. To express their disappointment with the result, the protesters waved rainbow flags throughout the city.

Italy legalized same-sex civil unions in 2016. It refrained from allowing homosexual couples to adopt due to Catholic Church opposition.

Although some local authorities decided to act unilaterally, decisions have instead been made on a case-by-case basis by the courts in legal action brought by parents.

Milan had been registering children of same-sex couples born abroad via surrogacy. Which Italy prohibits surrogacy and limits access to medically assisted reproduction to heterosexual couples only

What Mayor disclosed?

Beppe Sala, the city’s left-leaning mayor, disclosed this week that the Ministry of the Interior had sent a letter. Insisting that the courts make the decision, which had caused the registrations to stop.

Fabrizio Marrazzo of the Gay Party states that around 20 children are waiting to be registered in Milan. Who criticized the move as “unjust and discriminatory“.

A mother or father who is not formally acknowledged as the parent of their child can face major bureaucratic challenges. This includes the possibility of losing custody of the child if the registered parent passes away or the couple’s relationship ends.
