Premier League players will wear the words “Black Lives Matter” on the back of their shirts upon next week’s restart. The slogan will replace the footballers’ surnames
The players can also choose the place of the message elsewhere on their shirts, probably on the sleeves, once agreement is completed with the Premier League’s commercial partners.
The shirt tribute was proposed by a group of Premier League captains and Professional Footballers’ Association representatives, with moves under way to ensure kit is prepared appropriately
The initiative was discussed at Thursday’s Premier League meeting where 20 clubs already supported the idea and complete the general agreement.
Only during the opening round of fixtures at the season’s restart this support will be presented by the players and members.
The tribute comes to support the BLM protest and showing solidarity against the death of George Floyd.
Clubs will also respect one minute’s silence for those who have died during the COVID-19 pandemic and kits will include a heart-shaped badge in honor of NHS and frontline staff during the crisis.
In recent weeks several Premier League clubs have posed taking a knee to protest racial issues.
After a three-month stoppage due to coronavirus outbreak, the Premier League will restart on June 17.
