“Prayers” for the Amazon Rainforest as wildfire blazes

By Shayan Shakir
The Amazon Rainforest is being devastated by a massive wildfire that has been going on for the past 3 weeks.
On Monday the Brazilian city of Sao Paulo was blackened for an hour by smoke that had been blown by the winds from the states of Amazonas and Rondonia, more than 2,700km away.
Gianvitor Dias, a local resident, described the smoke to the BBC. He said: “It was as if the day had turned into night. Everyone here commented, because even on rainy days it doesn’t get that dark. It was very impressive.”
President Jair Bolsonaro has been criticised for not taking any action towards the wildfire and the general deforestation that is carried out in the Amazon.
#prayforamazonia, has ended up becoming a globally trending hashtag on Twitter. The social media channel ended up receiving more than 150,000 references to the fires.
