Author: Chris Riddell
What makes this poetry book stand out, especially at first glimpse, is the beautiful illustrations within it. Of course, the poems are brilliant and the wording artistic and clever, but there is something spell-binding about the pictures within the pages.
Chris clearly has a flair for drawing; his illustrations are effortless and manage to look so dreamy – they are almost fairytale-like in their depiction. They add another dimension to this wonderful collection of poems, which are divided into 8 significant sections: Musings, Youth, Family, Love, Imaginings, Nature, War and Endings.
The poem choices are strong and the subject matter is exceedingly diverse; covering everything from important themes such as death and isolation to the more ordinary and light-hearted, like prose about cats and love letters.
Many established poets are recognised in this collection: Carol Ann Duffy, William Shakespeare and W.B Yeates are just a few prime examples of those eligible to find their way into this delightful array of creative gems.
The Minister For Exams by Brian Patten is my favourite poem because although the topic seems so simple, the thought process behind the story is pronounced and the overall subject eye-opening.
I Miss You by A.F Harrold is another touching piece of text that finds a way to reach out to you without being particularly clever or complex – it is just an honest and straightforward poem with sentiment and substance.
This book is a stunning compilation that will draw you in with its wonderful works and elegant artwork. It is a quality poetry collection that you can enjoy reading and admiring in equal measure. Definitely one for the wordsmiths and artsy types.
