Peter Rabbit has been a beloved book series for over 100 years and this year, Sony has released its way of bringing Peter to a new audience.
The humans were surprisingly interesting; they could have been one-note and boring like so many other similar films. Instead we get something a bit different – which was nice to see. The scenes of their parents were lovely.
The part which shows the fate of Peter’s father in-particular was done well. We could have done with more, though, there was certainly potential for the film to have a bigger heart.
However, most of the charm is absent. Sure, some parts of the film still hold a quaint feel, but it no longer feels timeless. Additionally, some fans are appalled this “new” Peter’s personality. The original Peter was written as a naughty, but naive little boy. In comparison, Sony’s Peter is portrayed as a cocky college-age teenager whose idea of fun is maiming the lead human role.
The Peter Rabbit fan will most likely not enjoy the movie; the sometimes-crude humour would probably put them off, but your average 10-year-old would certainly enjoy it.
