Peru are through to their first Copa America final since 1975 after defeating their neighbors Chile with a 3-0 win in Porto Alegre on Wednesday night. Now they will face the giant Brazil team on Sunday in the Copa America 2019 final.
The journey of two-time defending champions Chile has ended after they fell behind a quick and eager Peruvian side. It is not a surprise for the Peruvians as they defeated a strong Uruguay side in their previous match to confirm their place in the semi.
Peru took the lead at the 20th minute after a right corner was superbly volleyed by Edison Flores. They got their second goal of the match 17 minutes later after a huge mistake by Chile goalkeeper Gabriel Arias. Carillo’s cross was nicely received by Yoshimar Yotun and without doing any mistakes he managed to find the net.
La Roja played a much better game in the second half with maximum ball possession but either their attempts were gone off target or defended by the Peruvian goalkeeper. Chile were totally out of the match in the 91st minute when Jose Paolo Guerrero finds himself in a 1 on 1 situation with the keeper and made the scoreboard 3-0.
La Roja managed to get a penalty in the final minute of the game, but Eduardo Vargas failed to score and had to finish their Copa America 2019 Journey.
“Peru played well, they deserve to be in the final,” said Chilean midfielder Gary Medel. “That hurts as we wanted to win another title. We had chances in the second half but we couldn’t convert them.”
Peru will play Brazil in the final at Rio de Janeiro’s Maracana stadium on Sunday. Guerrero said that they have experience to play against Brazil in the group stage and they will start planning to win their first Copa America since 1975.
“I think we all played well, we all made sacrifices,” he said.
“We were very intense and we deserve to be in the final. Now we need to rest and think of Brazil. It’ll be a very hard final,” Guerrero added.
