Over 102 killed in Western Ethiopia

Over 102 people have been massacred in Western Ethiopia due to ongoing ethnic conflicts. Anika Khan reports.

  • A mass massacre took place a day after the PM of Ethiopia, Abiy Ahmed visited the Benishnagul-Gumuz region and spoke about the ongoing ethnic conflicts urging a stop to these internal conflicts.
  • On Wednesday officials have reported a group of armed men attacking children and unarmed civilians with guns and knives. Witnesses have revealed that over 102 people have been killed in this incident.
  • There has been an ongoing conflict between the Ethiopian forces and Tigray regional forces since the month of November.
  • Federal troops had to be deployed to fight these internal conflicts which soon turned deadly, raising fears of security for the locals.
  • Even before the conflict arises, the government has been having to deal with several conflicts from different violent groups fighting over land and other resources.
  • These extreme groups have forced thousands of people to leave their home and on the road without anywhere else to go.
  • Since Abiy was elected as the Prime minister, he tried promoting national unity in the country which consists of more than eighty ethnic groups.
