Netflix is to remake the Japanese anime TV series “Cowboy Bepop” as a live-action series which was previously being adapted as a feature film with Keanu Reeves set to star.
The streaming giant has handed out a 10-episode, straight-to-series order for a live-action adaptation of famed anime entry Cowboy Bebop. The series was previously set up at Amazon Studios and landed at Netflix after the former passed on it.
Based on the 1998 Japanese anime TV series from writer Cain Kuga, Cowboy Bebop was a worldwide phenomenon and is wildly considered one of the biggest series in the anime genre.
The series is described as the jazz-inspired, genre-bending story of Spike Spiegel, Jet Black, Faye Valentine and Radical Ed, a rag-tag crew of bounty hunters on the run from their pasts as they hunt down the solar system’s most dangerous criminals.
The director of the original show, Shinichiro Watanabe, is working on the TV show as a consultant. Additionally, veterans of Sunrise Inc., the studio that made the show originally, are executive producing the new live-action version.
Netflix has committed to a 10-episode first season with an impressive lineup of show-runners on board like Andre Nemec and Josh Appelbaum along with Jeff Pinkner and Scott Rosenberg. The “Thor” script-writter, Christopher Yost is to write the first episode.
The announcement comes as Netflix has been pushing more and more into the anime space, with the streamer having ordered multiple original anime shows, including one based on “Pacific Rim.”
“Cowboy Bepop” is Netflix’s second major live-action adaptation of a beloved animated series to be announced this fall.
