Netflix Cancels Everything Sucks

Netflix has been cutting more original shows than ever before. The most recent show to be cancelled is ‘Everything Sucks’, which made its debut in February.
Many people are disappointed that the show has been cut, including Beau Willimon, the creator of Netflix’s ‘House of Cards’. Netflix, which this year will spend an additional £5,5 billion on originals series, continues to be more selective when it comes to returning shows.
The series – which follows a group of teens in Boring, Oregon in 1996 – only made it one season of ten episodes before Netflix cancelled it.
‘Everything Sucks’ was particularly praised for its lesbian representation as it followed young Kate Messner’s (Kennedy) coming-out process. Her journey shows how hard it is to be LGBT and a teenager, especially two decades ago.
Both cast members and fans of the show have taken to Twitter to express their disappointment in Netflix for cancelling without taking a chance on a second season, even when it was already on the minds of creators Ben York Jones and Michael Mohan.
The cast and creators had been fighting for the support to continue the show, and the cancelation has resulted in a fan battle to save it. Fans are already campaigning for the diverse and inclusive show to be renewed. There’s even a Change.org petition begging Netflix to bring the show back.
The series received mixed reviews from critics, with the show currently holding a 69% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and an impressive 89% metric among viewers.
It is not the first time Netflix has disappointed the LGBT community, with ‘Sense 8’ also being cancelled. Unfortunately, representation of LGBT people (particularly young teenagers) is still scarce on mainstream TV.
“We are super proud of the show we made — and very proud that it found an audience of very passionate fans, for many of whom it became an important personal touchstone: either reflecting their current life, or an echo of their own teenage years,” Executive Producer Jeff Pinker said. “We are grateful to Netflix for the opportunity, but are very disheartened we won’t be continuing to tell these stories.”
