National Film Awards UK 2018: the nominations

Around 2,4 million movie fans have had their say and the official shortlist of nominees in the 19 categories of the National Film Awards UK 2018 was announced earlier today.

The National Film Awards UK is one of the only film awards that gives the general public a voice and the chance to nominate their favourite films and performances in a wide range of categories.

Leading the pack of nominees is “Kingsman: The Golden Circle” with a record nine nominations. The British action-spy comedy is up for this year’s Best British Film, Best International Film and Best Comedy awards. Director Matthew Vaughn is nominated in the Best Director category.

Taron Egerton, Keith Allen, Colin Firth and Halle Berry are nominated in the acting categories. Sir Elton John has also been nominated for the first time in the Best Breakthrough Performance categories for his participation in “Kingsman: The Golden Circle”.

Another of this year’s favourites, “Dunkirk” is up for three awards: Best British Film, Best Director and Best Newcomer for singer-turned-actor Harry Styles for his depiction of soldier Alex. Styles’ main rival will be Daniel Kaluuya for his role in “Get Out”. Competition will be presented by another five actors competing in the category.

Guy Ritchie’s “King Arthur: Legend of the Sword” is also up for awards in three categories: Best Drama, Best Action and Best Director.

Other films nominated in this year’s edition of the National Film Awards UK are “Their Finest” with Gemma Arterton nominated in the Best Actress category, “Lady Macbeth”, “Film Stars Don’t Die in Liverpool” with an acting nomination for Julie Walters and “You Were Never Really There”.

In the television category, “Broadchurch” season 3, “Taboo” and “The Cuckoo’s Calling” based on J.K.Rowling’s detective thrillers are all nominated.

The awards will be handed out at the National Film Awards UK ceremony at The Porchester on the 28 March. Highlights of the ceremony will then be broadcast on Sky Showcase.
