Myanmar has witnessed the bloodiest weekend in its history as the country’s army killed over 100 people. Anika Khan reports.
We bring you the latest news from Myanmar:
- On Saturday, the security forces cracked down on protests against the coup that ousted Aung San Su Kyi’s government.
- At least 114 people have been killed during this crackdown including several children.
- This took place during the military chief parade in the capital of Myanmar to mark Armed Forces Day.
- The protestors who have been killed were accused of “terrorism” by the chief General Min Aung Hlaing.
- Min Aung also repeated claims about election Fraudulent and promised new elections to take place soon.
- UN secretary-general Antonia Guterres expressed his shock and horror over the news of the killing of the civilians in Myanmar.
- He said, “The continuing military crackdown is unacceptable and demands a firm, unified & resolute international response”.
- Following this incident, defense secretaries from 12 countries issued a joint statement calling on the Burmese army to “work to restore respect and credibility with the people of Myanmar that it has lost through its actions.”
- The countries include Australia, Britain, Canada, Denmark, Germany, Greece, Italy, Japan, Netherlands, New Zealand, South Korea, and the United States.
After the weekend of brutality, protestors have been back in the streets of major cities including Yangon and Mandalay to demonstrate their protests just to be greeted with more police violence today.
