Music Monday: Top new releases of this week!

Time to update your playlist? Adam Humphries brings you new music reviews for this month!

Anna Krantz: The Trouble with Suzie

The Trouble with Suzie is the new, and third, a great new track from Irish singer/songwriter, Anna Krantz, and it’s actually rather a good one. It is a country song with plenty of upbeat rhythm and melody and is an easy one to sing along to once you have gotten the words.

Hailing from Dublin, she’s good friends with music genius Ed Sheeran and has already acquired a big following. And if this song is anything to go by, it’s not hard to see why.

Lyrically, Trouble with Suzie, is not so much about the character of Suzie who is at the centre of the situation, but more about the erratic, destructive behaviours that we all have been through at some point.

There is something a little bit bewitching in regards to the way the song-writing has been done, but altogether there is something quite genius about how you can take life experiences and personify them. In a metaphoric sense, Suzie is a representation of the problems faced by us all.

For a song that’s just under 3 minutes, it’s an amazing track. Also, there’s something about Irish accents in music that just hits the right notes all the time.

James Burt: Dance In The Rain

Meet James Burt, the new artist who has released his new track ‘Dance in the Rain’. He has been writing music since his very early years and is one of those talented individuals who has gone from listening to incredible music to actually writing it. During the process, he has gradually acquired a big following, which looks set to get even bigger.

A huge lover of the synthwave genre and of 80’s music icons, Joy Division, James’s influences do shine through in his track, Dance in the Rain.

The song has a sombre, yet calm opening which quite quickly becomes soft and melodic, as the beat slowly progresses it becomes more upbeat which is accompanied by guitar riffs and haunting, yet warm backing vocals. Lyrically, the song is full of emotion and tells a humane story based on everyday human experiences.

For me, this is the first time I have heard anything by James Burt yet he has definitely got something special going on, and can’t wait to hear more from him. James is the Ian Curtis for the 2020’s kids and music fans of today.

Jessica Wilde: Play God

British singer/songwriter, Jessica Wilde, who also co-wrote with Rudimental, Ghetts and Tough Love is emerging with her fresh new single, ‘Play God’, which is about celebrating the power of the female body. Now before you let your thoughts run away with you, step back a moment or two shall we.

The song, Play God, is about celebrating the empowerment of the feminine form so it is more about body positivity than anything, and considering what many women have to go through, it’s about time.

Also on musical duties is Charlie Perry ( producer for Jorja Smith, Maverick Sabre, and BTS) who provides the second vocals on the track and who also happens to have been involved in the production side of things as well. The track is a blend of hip-hop, psychedelic soul, atmospheric sounds as well as 90’s musical fusions of dance legends Massive Attack.

When you hear the end result is, quite simply put, is going to be one of the most incredible sound creations that you are likely to hear so far. The music like to softly flowing water with beautifully haunting voices that echo female emotion and power, and for a track that’s just over 4 minutes long, it’s an absolute gem. Jessica Wilde, who is the main vocalist on this song, is just enchanting. Once you hear her, you don’t want her to stop.
