Definitely caused some controversy in the neighbouring Russia simply cos of its subject matter, and Jamala well and truly stood her ground when singing it. The song is a direct reference to the conflicts between Russia and Ukraine and alleged links to Nazi Germany in the 1940’s

Austrian singer songwriter Thomas Neuworth aka Conchita Wurst definitely came a trailblazer when singing about rising from the ashes admid moments of devastation and soldiering on regardless. Rise has all the elements about fighting for freedoms
