Adam Humphries, the music editor for WhatsOn, recommends some recently released upbeat tracks. Together, create a playlist and dance the rest of the week away. The week’s top playlist is shown here.

Michael Hamilton drops sonically dark & playful glitch hop tune – “In Spite Of Everything”

Musician, composer, and all-round music maestro hailing all the way from Glasgow, Scotland, Michael has earned the respect of many of the musical talents he’s worked with over the years as well as that of his music fears. He has produced music tracks for TV and film productions, even video games. However, he has also been working on his own sounds as part of his side project. In Spite Of everything is part of the finished product.

Just over three minutes long but definitely worth a listen, the song is a steady mixture of electronic and ambient sounds with a few rhythmic base-type beats in the background. The most intriguing but also genius part of this is that you think you’re going to get the vocals to the point of actually expecting it but never getting any. Vocals can be heard but only as background sound effects.

Overall an impressive number

Tiffany Page – On Your Head

Released back in 2010 On Your Head is by British singer songwriter musician the song is about a guy who’s on the run with his partner in crime who also happens to be his lover or victim as they go on the run. Now we’ve all heard about love story centered songs where there’s often trouble in paradise but this one has an interesting spin as the partner is either a willing accomplice or kidnap victim

This tune more or less showed what Tiffany was capable of as an upcoming artist, it’s just a shame that it or the artist received more attention as they’re definitely worth it.

Planet Funk – The Switch

Released over twenty years ago (that long ago) in 2002 by an Italian electronic dance band. A switch is about having that inner feeling which in itself is something growing immensely yet not being able to say it vocally. In some respect, there’s actually something genius about the whole concept of the track itself as it’s about speaking things that are quite complicated to say vocally but can do it physically. The metaphors are cleverly used as they compare feelings to itching; it’s there persistently you can’t quite deal with them

Another thing that’s quite clever about the video is that at first glance it looks like it can’t possibly make sense but when you look closely at what’s going on you can probably apply it

James Blake – The Wilhelm Scream

Released back in 2011, over a decade ago but not that long ago, British singer-songwriter musician James Blake created this song when he was listed for the BBC Sound of 2011 and was championed by DJ Giles Peterson. Since then he’s won several awards for his music and even gained a slot on the In New DJ’s We Trust on Radio 1. Not bad at all.

The song’s a cover track of his dad’s song, Where to Turn, by James Litherland.

When you pay close attention to the lyrics there’s an element of Kate Bush in that James sings about things he knows and experiences as well as understands.

Musically the song is a dreamy ambient melody that is soft and captivating which small elements of post-dubstep. James’s singing is both warm and haunting yet he draws you in and keeps you intrigued.

Wilhelm Scream is about knowing and understanding our dreams.
