More than 100 killed in Ecuador’s gang fight

Death toll outnumbered by 100 while some inmates were beheaded in the gang war broke out a riot at one of Ecuador’s most shady prisons. Among a series of deadly clashes that took over in this prison, this is the recent one causing numerous deaths and left some injured.

This notorious cruelty broke out on Tuesday at the Penitenciaria del Litoral prison in Guayaquil, Ecuador reports from the country’s prison bureau show. The regional police commander Fausto Buenano marked that bodies found in the facility were still being spotted.

According to president Guillermo Lasso 6 out 0f 116 dead bodies were found beheaded. This is a result of bloody fights between rival gangs, known as the “Los Lobos” and “Los Choneros” prison gangs that involved gunfire, knives, and explosions for control of the prison in recent months.

“It is unfortunate that criminal groups are attempting to convert prisons into a battleground for power disputes,” Lasso told reporters in Guayaquil, Ecuador’s largest city.

Lasso added, for the sake of security in the prison and to avoid repeating such events and life loss he would send additional security forces and will favor funds too.

After several hours of operation, police managed to retake control of the prison using a ‘non-lethal weapon’. Even the officers were attacked by armed prisoners, but there’s no update of whether these officers killed or injured any prisoners.

A video posted by the government of Guayas State showed several riot cops entering the prison. Soon after entering to stop this fight, the police evacuated six cooks being from the facility. Some weapons have been seized from the prison by cops. Armored vehicles, soldiers, ambulances, and relatives of inmates gathered outside the prison expecting any news coming of their loved ones who were inside.

This prison bloodbath in Guayaquil isn’t a new incident. In July of the following year, Lasso called for an emergency in Ecuador’s prison system as similar incidents were taking place in the prison resulted in the death of more than 100 insiders. Before that same thing happened in February, where 79 prisoners died in riots in three prisons across the country. Soon after the July incident, the facility was under drone attack though no causalities had been made.
