“Before, people used to steal and kill for drugs, revenge, passionate crimes, but lately the world is crazy”, says one of the FBI agents.
FBI officers Holden Ford (Jonathan Groff) and Bill Tench (Holt McCallany) realise that how can they hope to stop murderers hidden in society if the police only consider them as “fools”, if they put up a moral resistance to learning how murderers think? In 1977, the FBI are sceptical of psychology. Bad guys, they believe, are just bad.
The federal agents are trying to justify to their boss why they want to look into murderers’ minds. They win. A new FBI department is born, the Elite Serial Crime Unit, with a new methodology: travelling around the US interviewing serial killers and recording their responses.
They end up knowing how to speak a serial killer’s language in order to stop similar crimes happening in the future. These conversations with real-life monsters give the audience a new picture of serial killers, not as monsters but humans, by giving them an insight into their psychopathy.
The show, produced and partially directed by David Fincher, is based on the non-fiction book “Mind Hunter: Inside FBI’s Elite Serial Crime Unit” by former FBI agent John E. Douglas – one of the first people at the agency to see the advantages of communicating with these troubled minds.
