Major family review Browns restaurant, Birmingham

On arrival, the large airy glassed windows allow guests to see, with one glance, almost the entire interior of the restaurant. Once seated guests have an almost 270 degree view of St Martins Square and the beautiful imposing church.
The restaurant interior is a staggering combination of post industrial modernist elements set against classic cafe bistro styling. Above head, there are large air conditioning pipes; wooden tiles cover the floor area; wine cabinets adorn the outer walls separated by framed wall pictures, then there is a beautiful black grand piano set towards the back of the restaurant. From time to time musicians use the piano to entertain guests while they dine.
The pleasant waiter greeted us and showed us to our table. For starters we tried the basket of bread at £2.95. Then Prawn Cocktail at £6.50. The prawns were of course fresh and the Marie Rose sauce lightly flavoured. The dish was served with brioche croutons, semi- dried cherry tomatoes and multi seeded toast. This was a delicious dish to start with. The serving was generous yet not too filling. We also chose the soup of the day, tomato soup at £4.95. The soup was very richly flavoured and served at the perfect temperature. We also elected for the Pan Seared Scallops at £9.50. The scallops were served with cauliflower puree; curried cauliflower tempura; sea rosemary; grape and shallot vinaigrette. The dish was very well cooked slightly spicy and slightly sweet. Together the elements created a delicious combination that pleased.
For our mains we chose the Duo of Lamb at £16:95. The dish was comprised of lamb cutlets and pulled shoulder of lamb shepherd’s pie topped with buttered mash, sautéed samphire, chestnut mushrooms and red wine jus. Again, the dish was a combination of well complimenting flavours and improved by the sweet of the red wine jus. We also chose the Brown Fish Pie at £14.50. The dish was a great combination of salmon; prawn; scallop; garden peas; Isle of Man Cheddar Mash; parmesan and parsley crumb. Once again a hearty meal with great freshly sourced ingredients that satisfied. Finally we chose the BBQ glazed short rib of beef at £14.95. The dish was comprised of flat mushroom; chunky chips; roasted vine tomatoes; smokey tomato and red sauce. Thoroughly enjoyable flavoursome and very well prepared.
For dessert we chose the Sticky Toffee Pudding, served with Stem Ginger ice cream at £6.50. The dish was very well balanced so as not to be too sweet, as is often the case with Sticky Toffee Pudding. The ginger introduced a welcomed slight kick to each mouthful. Finally we chose the Apple, Cherry and Almond pie. The offering was served with brandy snap basket and vanilla ice cream. Simply put, perfection.
Browns restaurant, St Martin’s Square Birmingham, is a great place to dine. Whether as a family after a shopping trip to the near by Bull Ring or as a couple, or just for a quick and delicious lunch. General Manager Ranjit, has managed to create a warm, welcoming and utterly professional experience with the best food available. His entire waiting staff are responsive, knowledgable and efficient. We could not fault the experience or the extremely well cooked food. Very highly recommended for families or any other occasion.
