Lady Gaga Talks about Racism at “Dear Class of 2020”

Lady Gaga has been actively speaking about racism for years, and recently gave a moving speech about racism to the students of 2020 via a virtual graduation. Puza Snigdha reports.

The singer was supposed to give a speech about the coronavirus crisis at the YouTube’s “Dear Class of 2020” graduation video series, but instead shared her experience about the death of George Floyd and the spread of Black Lives Matter protests.

She also explained what made her to reconsider her speech:

  • “My speech was recorded before the murder of George Floyd and the subsequent activist movement protesting police brutality and systemic racism in this country.”
  • “You are watching what a pivotal moment in this country’s evolution is. You are watching society change in a deeply important way. This change will be slow and we will have to be patient, but change will happen and it will be for the better.”
  • Gaga then went on to outline a metaphor of American society as being a forest and said: “This forest is where we live. It’s who we are. It’s the morals and value system that we as a society have upheld for centuries.”
  • “I believe in my heart that the people who are going to make this change happen are listening to this speech right now. You are the seeds that will grow into a new and different forest that is far more beautiful [than the one we live in right now].”

Gaga concluded by saying: “Congratulations to the Class of 2020”.
