Jake Gyllenhaal to Join Marvel as Mysterio in ‘Spider-Man’ Sequel

Jake Gyllenhaal Mysterio

The Oscar-nominated actor Jake Gyllenhaal, is in talks to play the classic Marvel villain Mysterio, one of Spidey’s oldest foes, in the sequel to Spider-Man: Homecoming which is slated for a July 5, 2019 release.
Spider-Man creators, Stan Lee and Steve Ditko, introduced Mysterio in the comics in 1964. A special effects expert, Quentin Beck used his talents to create elaborate illusions to commit crimes and to fight Spider-Man.
Although there have been several Mysterio characters that have appeared in Spider-Man comics throughout the years, Quentin Beck is probably the character Gyllenhaal will play if the creators want to stick to the classic interpretations of Spider-Man villains.
The 37-year-old actor was in competition with Ryan Gosling for the antagonist role, although Gosling had to withdraw due to scheduling conflicts.
“Producers were keen to sign Ryan but he was busy filming another project. Jake is a suitable alternative with experience of playing villainous characters”, stated in a report.
The actor having recently appeared in Stronger, Life, Okja, and the upcoming Paul Dano-directed feature Wildlife. Confirmed cast members include Tom Holland and Jacob Batalon, while Zendaya is also expected to return to the series.
“Superhero movies have inspired me. I remember when I saw ’Thor’ I was really inspired,”said Jake at SXSW in 2016. “There’s a reason for myth. They are so moving and so important”.
