International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, 21 March

75th anniversary of the UDHR – an impetus to combat racism

75 years after the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), the issue of the International Day in 2023 emphasizes the need for quick action to fight racism and racial discrimination.

The international community came to an agreement on a set of shared principles and acknowledged that each and every person has rights that are fundamental and not granted by the State for the first time in 1975. These rights outlined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which serves as a guide for global standards in this field.

According to the UDHR, everyone has the same access to all rights. Without distinction of any factors, like race or color, among others. Racism and racial discrimination, however, still have an impact on people all over the globe.

The 75th anniversary of the UDHR’s adoption should serve as an opportunity for States. To act rapidly and forcefully, both in law and in practice, to advance equality and fight racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia, and other forms of intolerance.

As part of the Human Rights 75 initiative, Volker Türk, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, has urged all States to combat racial discrimination by resolving to take specific and immediate action.

Background

This day the police in Sharpeville, South Africa, opened fire on a peaceful protest against apartheid “pass laws” in 1960 and murdered 69 people. That day recall every year as the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.

A schedule of initiatives for the second half of the Decade for Action to Combat Racism and Racial Discrimination approved by the General Assembly in 1979. On that occasion, the General Assembly resolved that all States would organize an annual week of solidarity with the peoples fighting against racism and racial discrimination, starting on March 21.

Since then, South Africa’s apartheid regime dismantled. UN established an international framework for combating racism, led by the International Convention on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. Many nations have abolished racist laws and practices. Even though the Convention is now close to being ratified by all countries. Racism continues to cause injustice and stigma in too many communities and cultures around the world.

Principle of Equality

The General Assembly of the United Nations reiterates that all people are born free, with an equal sense of respect and rights. They also have the capacity to make an impact on the growth and welfare of their societies. The General Assembly also stressed in its most recent resolution. Theories that seek to establish the existence of different human races must be rejected along with any theory of racialsupremacy. Because it is morally repugnant, socially unjust, and dangerous.

Since its establishment, the United Nations has been concerned about this problem; all fundamental international agreements on human rights prohibit racial discrimination. States given duties and given the mandate to end discrimination in both the public and private fields. In accordance with the equity principle, states must take extra steps to abrogate situations that give rise to or support racial discrimination.
