Indian farmers continue to protest

Earlier today, thousands of Indian farmers blocked the highway to the Capital of Delhi, calling out the law which opens sectors to big businesses to take over their livelihood. Anika Khan reports.

  • Organizations, Trade Unions, local traders, teachers, and students stood in solidarity with these farmworkers, opposing the new bills passed under the Modi government.
  • Communist Party of Indian Marxists praised this mass participation and put out a bold statement warning the current Indian government about longer and difficult roads ahead.
  • PM Narendra Modi remained defiant on the new laws despite the mass protests, refusing to listen to the demands of the farmer.
  • The Prime Minister claims that the new measures will increase the farmer’s incomes in two folds. The Unions dismissed these claims and are yet to come to an agreement over these disputes.
  • Former chief economic advisor, Kaushik Basu claims that the farm Bills are “flawed” and ” will be detrimental to farmers.”
  • Many parties agree that India’s agriculture regulations need to change. However, the new laws are inclined towards serving corporate interests rather than the local farmers.
  • The government deployed the Indian Security forces to control the mass protests.

United Farmers’ Protest leader, Kamal Preet Singh Pannu said that they will continue t protest peacefully despite Government interventions to crush the movement.
