How To Go Green During COVID-19

Social media is brimming with posts about backyard vegetable crops and windowsill mini-gardens. What stemmed from a fear of food shortage, has blossomed into a positive hobby keeping stress at bay for many. Tanzia Haq brings you the scoop on micro-farming.

Sales in seeds and compost is seeing growth as people turn to planting fruits and vegetables in their homes, using whatever space they have avaliable, bir or small!

While it’s not practical to think farming at home will be enough to sustain dietary needs, it is a rewarding practice that can teach us to reap the benefits of hard work and patience, in a world consumed with instant gratification.

The habit can also teach us to respect the work farmers do to get us the food we need. While most of us are turning to gardening now that we have the time, long time hobbyists will tell you that tending to a garden can be quite time consuming and warrants low expectations.

But if all these reasons haven’t deterred you from the desire to see your efforts literally bear fruit, give planting a try. There are countless benefits, for instance micro-farming keep you outdoors, offers good exercise and is a great activity to share with your kids.

Remember to get your advice from reliable sources, such as horticultural websites or reputed writers, and do your research on soil types and seed needs before you get digging. While your baby crop may not be replacing the supermarket any time soon, but the possibilities to experiment are fun and endless!

You can also share your projects online and inspire others and join communities of gardeners and micro-farmers all over the world. The experience will be rewarding and definite boost on endorphins when you see the first furry little shoots popping out of the ground.
