How long will there be a ‘political silence’ on GAZA?

Activists and protesters have condemned the government for their silence on Gaza. Gaza has been under what can possibly be defined as the worst humanitarian crisis in the modern world. Since 2007 Gaza has been subjected to a blockade by land, air, and sea. Anika Khan reports.

Last month, the Israeli government has closed all commercial crossings in Gaza and banned fishing boats off the coasts. Fuels have been banned allowing Gazans to only 4 hours of electricity a day. And for the last three weeks, Israel has been continuously bombing small regions in night air raids killing unarmed civilians and children.

On Tuesday activists, trade unions and doctors from Gaza held an online rally condemning the British government on their political silence. The rally was held by a Palestinian Solidarity Campaign group. They have appealed to the British public to come to their support and help them end the siege.

The country was already battling the uncontrollable spread of COVID and now has gone in a state of emergency due to the siege. Hospitals are overwhelmed with injured and COVID patients. Authorities fear that an outbreak in any of these hospitals will have very deadly circumstances. Moreover, the lockdowns for the pandemic has led to more than 4000 losses of jobs, affecting the countries already ravaged economy.

Activists have also pointed out the silence of the mainstream media in highlighting the devastating condition that Gaza and its people are left in. The people of Gaza need to have their own identity. It is high time that the veil is lifted and the world sees what is happening in Gaza.
