Anthropology students felt compelled to walk out of a lecture when Princeton professor Lawrence Rosen used a serious racial slur which they felt offended by three times during his course on cultural freedoms and hate speech. After complaints, the course has now been cancelled
A group of them later asked for him to apologize for using the racial slur but he refused to do so, sparking an argument with some of them. The students then filed an official complaint with the Ivy League institution.
Professor Lawrence Rosen had used the example of racial slur in the same course in previous years but had never received any complaints. University officials have defended Rosen.
“The conversations and disagreements that took place in the seminar led by Professor Rosen are part of the vigorous engagement and robust debate that are central to what we do,”, said the statement that the university issued in support of Professor Emeritus Rosen. The statement also highlighted the central role of free speech and inclusivity at Princeton.
