Guillain-Barré & Associated Inflammatory Neuropathies

EMERGENCY APPEAL

Guillain-Barré & Associated Inflammatory Neuropathies (GAIN) is the only organisation in the UK and
Republic of Ireland dedicated to supporting people affected by Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS), CIDP
and the variants.

GBS is a rare autoimmune condition affecting the peripheral nervous system. It causes the nerves in the
arms and legs to become inflamed and stop working, usually leading to temporary paralysis. Annually,
GBS affects 1-2 people per 100,000 with a further 1-2 per 200,000 being diagnosed with CIDP, a similar
but longer-lasting condition. Recovery can take weeks or months and about 80% of those with GBS will
make a good recovery. Sadly between 5-10% of people will die and the other 10-15% may experience
long term residual effects ranging from limited mobility or dexterity, to life-long dependency on a
wheelchair.

Imagine being in ICU with COVID19. Just as you think you are getting better it triggers GBS and you are
back on the ventilator. Only this time you are paralysed.
