Thousands of people turned out for the NYC Pride Parade Saturday. Attendees donned brightly colored socks, head bands, and many rainbow flags as they marched and road bikes down 5th avenue.
The annual event, in its 49th year, was attended by Cynthia Nixon. The actress, activist and now candidate for NYC governor, has been a champion for LGBTQ rights for a long time.
“I would argue that our coming out has never been more important than it is right now,” Nixon was quoted saying at a previous pride events. “Whether we are lesbian or gay or transgender or muslim or Mexican or any one of a number other categories I could name, we are allies united by our otherness.”
The festivities come at a time where the movement is more empowered and determined than ever to have their voices heard, especially with the election of President Donald Trump and Vice President Mike Pence. Trump has been pushing for transgender people to be banned from the U.S. military while Pence continues to support gay conversion therapy.
While there is still a long way to go for LGBTQ equal rights, there have been many strides forward, such as the right to legal marriage in several states. Pride Month will continue to be a celebration of identity, and a reminder of the many steps forward the community has taken and is trying to take towards societal equality.
