Gomorrah: TV’s best mob drama

Roberto Saviano created the Italian crime thriller television series Gomorra for Sky Atlantic. It has began on Sky Atlantic in May 2014 and ran for four seasons, based on Saviano’s book of the same name.
  • The TV series has been sold in 190 countries around the world. It has been a rating hit for Sky, with one of the most-watched cable series on the network. On December 5, 2019, the spin-off film The Immortal, which is both a prequel and a sequel to the third series, was released.
  • Ciro Di Marzio, a member of the Savastano Camorra clan of Secondigliano, navigates the Naples underworld in this series. When Pietro is incarcerated, a power struggle between him and his competitors, as well as his son Gennaro, erupts. The clan’s “old guard” and the “new guard,” led by his son, are at odds with their respective families.
  • Season one centered on Genny, the son of Don Pietro Savastano, and Ciro, one of the family’s most trusted captains, and was based on the 2008 film of the same name. They support, squabble, and stab each other in the back throughout the next 48 episodes. As star Salvatore Esposito (who plays Genny) describes it, their connection is a captivating blend of “hate, fraternity, love, and a drive for power.”
  • It was difficult for Marco D’Amore, who plays Ciro on Gomorrah, to reveal his castmates their season five destiny. “Telling the rest of the actors who died and who didn’t was the most difficult part,” he explains. Marco directed a few episodes of the show and collaborated on the writing with the screenwriters.
  • It covers topics like riches, morality, and capitalism that are similar to brutal Korean horror. According to the show’s creator, it’s largely about the power dynamic, and what people are willing to do to get or maintain power – and how that conflict contrasts with the characters’ domestic lives.
  • ‘Gomorrah’ season five debuts on Sky Atlantic and  NOW from the same date, 18th December 2021.
