“George Floyd” Protests Enter Third Week: Updates You Need to Know

The peaceful protests which have taken place across the globe in response to the tragic death of George Floyd have now entered its third week. Puza Snigdha reports.


Thousands of people including celebrities like John Boyega, Lady Gaga, Rihana have been supporting the protests both virtually and physically.

Here’s what you need to know:

  • Protests across the United States have remained mostly peaceful except in Seattle where one individual who was armed drove his car toward the crowd and that wounded a protestor.
  • A majority of the Minneapolis City Council have pledged to dismantle the Police Department. The nine, who represent a majority on the council, did not offer a timeline or propose specific actions but said they are “taking intermediate steps toward ending” the force.
  • New York City mayor Bill de Blasio on Sunday pledged to cut the police department’s funding, shifting the savings to social services.
  • William Barr, the US attorney general, asked to have military troops on standby to respond to US citizens exercising their right to protest.
  • Thousands have marched in Phoenix, Arizona, where protesters rally not just for George Floyd, but for Dion Johnson, a 28-year-old black man who was shot and killed by an Arizona Department of Public Safety officer.
  • American President Donald Trump had said the National Guard soldiers would withdraw “now that everything is under perfect control.” Trump added, “They will be going home, but can quickly return if needed,”
