Film Friday: Movies to watch this Weekend!

Not sure what to watch this weekend? Our film editor Mark is here to bring you wonderful five movies to watch this weekend!

Spirited Away

Often regarded as Studio Ghibli and director Hayao Miyazaki’s masterpiece. Spirited Away is one of the ultimate films for those feeling trapped and wanting to explore a new world in our current circumstances. When Chihiro and her parents stop and accidentally wander into the spirit world. They find themselves trapped in a strange and unusual bathhouse for spirits, renamed Sen and forced to work there, Spirited Away (and any of the Ghibli films for that matter) present the strange and unusual setting and revel in the confusing and strange elements presented, especially in its characters. After a large catalog of Miyazaki’s films now available on Netflix, now is the perfect chance to forget about where we are now, put one on, and just see where it takes you now.

Upgrade

‘Upgrade’ is a film that story or plot-wise doesn’t provide anything new that similar films before haven’t already covered. But what it does do is know where it exists and does what it does extremely well. After an accident leaves our protagonist a quadriplegic and kills his wife. Grey (Logan Marshall-Green) is offered the chance to have a chip implanted named “Stem” that would give him control of his limbs again. As to be expected once he gets the implant he begins trying to research into what exactly lead to the death of his wife, but he soon finds that Stem can talk directly through him and (with his permission) even take over his body, making him much more adept at fighting or maneuvers. Upgrade still manages a certain level of self-awareness to make it enjoyable, although as said before it’s anti-tech message and visuals aren’t anything we haven’t seen before from earlier films like The Terminator or Robocop, but Upgrade still provides a fun ride and premise nevertheless.

Rocks

The film follows teenager Rocks (Bukky Bakray) who fears that she and her little brother Emmanuel (D’angelou Osei Kissiedu) will be forced apart if anyone finds out they are living alone. With the help of her friends, she evades the authorities and navigates the most defining days of her life.

Charlies Angels

A reboot of the classic series, this new adaptation follows a team of female private agents, popularly known as Charlie’s Angels, who are tasked by their mysterious boss to expose an international conspiracy to weaponise an energy conservation device.

Now available to stream on Prime.

The Old Guard

This film follows a group of mercenaries, all centuries-old immortals with the ability to heal themselves, discover someone is onto their secret, and they must fight to protect their freedom. An exciting watch which is sure to keep you on the edge of your seat!
