The Babysitter: Killer Queen

Sequel to the 2017 Netflix hit The Babysitter comes Killer Queen. I find this to be an extremely polarising picture, with some calling it absurd and full of dated references, I found it to be a fun and quirky ride that definitely is NOT one to take seriously! After Cole survives an evil cult led by the previous babysitter he once again finds himself in dangerous waters when some old faces resurface. People may disagree about if the film is funny or if the comedy sticks, but most agree it is still an entertaining romp. I think this one dances the fine line between complete absurdity and B-movie greatness, but does so with tact you don’t get to see a lot of. I thoroughly enjoyed this and would recommend as a flick to watch with a group of friends – you will have a great night I guarantee!

The Social Dilemma

Social Media is powerful. For a great number of us, checking Facebook, or Twitter, or Instagram is almost a daily occurrence. It’s easy to overlook these apps we use and not realize the somewhat dark underside of them. The Social Dilemma brings some interesting ideas to the public attention, namely the idea that if a product is free, it probably means you’re the product, an idea that translates very firmly to social media. Featuring a range of experts and ex-employees from social networking giving insights on how some of these operate. About to finish browsing Facebook and see a picture of a dog or a loved one? That’s the algorithm at work constantly trying to keep your attention, and some of the dangers of these constantly developing codes just make up the tip of the web iceberg…

The Devil all the Time

Launching its way onto Netflix with a very quiet release comes The Devil All the Time. TDATT focuses on the town of  Knockemstiff, Ohio, and revolves around two generations of characters, however, this is the first of a few problems it faces, with certain storylines and characters being intrinsically more interesting than others. Robert Patterson as a clergyman and his relationship with his son, Tom Holland, in a completely different role from Marvel fans, may recognize him from previously. TDATT would have worked better as a TV series rather than trying to tell it’s narratives in one closed sitting. Whilst still enjoyable it’s hard to engage with some of the stories it tries to tell, and it makes you realize how the book it’s based on did a better job breaking apart the stories within the seven parts if was told in.

Zodiac (2007)

Relaunching back onto Netflix and into my recommendations (and now possibly yours!) came Zodiac. Directed by David Fincher and a dramatized retelling of the “Zodiac Killer” who terrorized and taunted police through the 1960s in the San Francisco area, given more precedence when one realizes he was actually never caught and a today is still a free man, or dead.  The film itself revolves around two journalists following the case, played by Robert Downey Jr and Jake Gyllenhaal and their relationship and characters play off each other to create strong and believable chemistry. It’s also very easy to draw comparisons to Se7en, Fincher’s other extremely famous crime story but they both portray different sides of the same coin, with Zodiac playing the smarter and longer game to tell its story, but a choice that definitely pays off.

Wake up Sid!

Siddharth is a spoilt college student with no ambition in life. One day he meets a new girl in Town named Aisha. She is an aspiring writer from Kolkata. Life takes an uexpected turn when they both start to live in an apartment as room mates. Soon Siddhart learns to take responsibilties and reinvents his passion for photography. A slice of life at its finest. The movie normalized men dating strong older women and shows that it is never late to find who you truly are.

The movie is available to stream on Netflix
