EXCLUSIVE: Dragworld's Jinkx Monsoon – Self Expression & Inclusivity

Fashion, fun and acceptance. If these are what you are searching for look no further. The world renowned DragWorld UK festival will be taking place once again at London’s Olympia Convention Centre from 18 – 19 August. Celebrating everything LGBT, this festival will give attendees the chance to meet some of their favourite Drag Queens – including Jinkx Monsoon who took the time to answer some of our questions…
Hannah Montgomery: Drag Queens are becoming more and more prominent as society becomes more accepting of those choosing to adopt more ‘alternative’ lifestyles. What are your thoughts on the current drag queen scene and do you think there is room for progression?
Jinkx Monsoon: I’m reminded of something my favorite teacher at college told me. In reference to theater trends, she told me, realism is dead- we are in a time of yearning for the fantastic. I think film and television have taken us to such a place of realism that we miss larger than life characters and situations. Drag is inherently larger than life, and satisfies that desire in audiences. I also think, while the world is so divided in political arguments, and differing ideas of what progress should be, drag allows us to relax and laugh a little bit. I think drag will continue to embrace inclusivity and diversity. Queens already celebrate the uniqueness that exists in all of us, and I think it has created a playground for self expression no matter who you are, what your background is, or what other communities you come from.
Hannah Montgomery: What do you personally think it takes to be a ‘Queen’?
Jinkx Monsoon: I think a strong sense of self awareness leads one to queendom. It’s not always about being the most confident, or bombastic, or over the top. Sometimes it’s just about knowing your truth and being willing to share that truth with others, either on stage, or just playing with self expression in your day to day life.
Hannah Montgomery: What advice would you give to those who are interested in exploring the Drag scene but may be too self-conscious to?
Jinkx Monsoon: I think it all starts with finding your own specific character and strengths. Once you know what you love most about yourself, you know what to put on display. Don’t be afraid to practice on your own, in a safe environment until you are ready to integrate your persona into the world.
Hannah Montgomery: Can you tell us about your involvement with DragWorld? What can we expect from your appearance?
Jinkx Monsoon: This is my second year doing Drag World. I find it to be a lot of fun, and I really enjoy getting to know new people. I will have new merchandise for purchase, but I will also be meeting with the fans at my booth for pictures, and hugs. I know how impactful it can be to meet someone who has had a special place in your life, and I get a lot of gratification getting to say hello to my supporters, and people who have drawn inspiration from my work.
Hannah Montgomery: What do you think makes DragWorld a great event to attend?
Jinkx Monsoon: A strong sense of community, and a rare opportunity to meet some of you drag idols all in one place.
Hannah Montgomery: Do you have a life motto or ethic that you abide by?
Jinkx Monsoon: “A Candle loses nothing by lighting another candle.” I think compassion and empathy take a lot less energy than being negative or hurtful, whatever the reason.
