EXCLUSIVE: DragWorld's Charity Kase – Alternative Lifestyles & Festival Love

This August London’s Olympia Convention Hall will be transformed into a hub of vibrancy, energy and pure LGBT greatness. Why? Because from 18 – 19 August DragWorld UK will take place, bringing with it a whole host of colourful characters. Amongst them is the eccentric Charity Kase, acknowledged for her uniqueness and ‘out there’ fashion sense. We spoke with the Queen ahead of her appearance at DragWorld UK this summer…
Hannah Montgomery: The drag queen is quite clearly thriving at this time, but what is your personal take on the current drag queen movement?
Charity Kase: I completely agree that the drag scene is thriving and I am very pleased to be a part of it! I think there is always room for progression in any art form; my style of drag is very alternative and I hope to push people’s perceptions of the boundaries of Drag.
Hannah Montgomery: There’s obviously a lot of effort that goes into being a ‘Queen’. What, in your opinion, do you need to get involved?
Charity Kase: Guts, talent, resilience, dedication and a sh*t ton of make-up and wigs.
Hannah Montgomery: Some people may not have the confidence to step out into the world as a Drag Queen. What support would you give to those in this position?
Charity Kase: I recommend booking a ticket to a show! Go and see some local queens and get a taste for what the drag scene is like in real life. Drag queens are generally really nice people and I am certain that someone will take you under their wing! Aso experiment with different styles of makeup and clothes at home until you’re happy with your final look and character.
Hannah Montgomery: You will be attending DragWorld 2018 – what can we anticipate from your involvement?
Charity Kase: I will be doing meet and greets over the Saturday and Sunday and will hopefully be involved in a panel or two. I will also be launching a new merchandise range in collaboration with an amazing illustrator @deathbycrabs at my booth all weekend. I’m super excited about it! Keep an eye on my social media for more announcements!
Hannah Montgomery: Why would you encourage people to attend DragWorld?
Charity Kase: It brings together a massive crowd of people who are passionate about the art of drag. Everyone there was smiling constantly.
Hannah Montgomery: The festival season is now in full swing. Will you be attending any this year?
Charity Kase: I am a festival fanatic. Last year I did 5 festivals back to back and loved every one. I think in the same way as conventions, everyone is there to let loose and have a great time – it’s almost a holiday from the real world. I haven’t got my game on yet for this year, thanks for the reminder! I will be performing at Flame festival this year and would love to get back to Bestival too.
Hannah Montgomery: What is your life motto?
Charity Kase: Pretty is passé.
