EXCLUSIVE: Dragworld's BibleGirl – Dreams & Drag

DragWorld UK is the biggest drag convention in Europe, and it is fast approaching! The glittering event – which celebrates the LGBT community and the drag queen scene – will take place from 18 – 19 August. In light of this we took the time to interview one of the featured Queens, BibleGirl, to find out more about her involvement…
Hannah Montgomery: Drag Queens are becoming more and more prominent as society becomes more accepting of those choosing to adopt more ‘alternative’ lifestyles. What are your thoughts on the current drag queen scene and do you think there is room for progression?
BibleGirl: I think the current, global drag scene is incredible and excitingly malleable! There is always room for more inclusion and progress within the industry. As a whole, drag is slowly shifting over to a much more gender-fluid spectrum as opposed to being solely categorized as being for ‘gay men only’. I also personally feel that as we are in the midst of year ten in a post-Drag Race culture, our community is navigating what I consider to be a cultural renaissance. As Drag Race is fortifying its position within the mainstream, a lot of locally based drag communities are working towards paving their own ways without directly dealing with reality TV. The challenge in which this puts all queens outside of television to task with is convincing bars and venue owners that all drag queens have something to offer.
Hannah Montgomery: What do you personally think it takes to be a ‘Queen’?
BibleGirl: I think it takes an unapologetic perspective and outlook to be a queen.
Hannah Montgomery: What advice would you give to those who are interested in exploring the Drag scene but may be too self-conscious to?
BibleGirl: For anybody on the fence about delving into drag exploration, I say, ‘TAKE THE DIVE’! Drag has created a platform in my life in which all of my aspirations and dreams have come true because of it.
Hannah Montgomery: Can you tell us about your involvement with DragWorld? What can we expect from your appearance?
BibleGirl: I am happily returning to DragWorld this year! You can expect nothing short of turning new looks, fun shows, and exclusive merchandise!
Hannah Montgomery: What do you think makes DragWorld a great event to attend?
BibleGirl: I think DragWorld is such an amazing event to attend for several reasons! One of them being that you instantly feel safe, and that you belong. The atmosphere is perfectly curated and tailored for all drag fans across the board. Everybody in attendance comes with big smiles and open hearts at the ready to meet new people and make new friends! Seeing friendships form over the course of the weekend in realtime is definitely a treat. Another point as to why this event is so stellar is that behind the scenes is a team that really cares about making sure the event is special for everybody. They really listen and pay attention to what fans look for in a drag convention, rather than taking on all executive decision making without any grounded basis. To know that DragWorld is an event and operation that CARES about everybody is the most important take away for me!
Hannah Montgomery: The festival season is fast approaching…are there any festivals you will be looking forward to attending? Why do you think festivals are so successful?
BibleGirl: I LOVE festival season! I am AMPED for QueerExpo in Australia this upcoming June/ July! I will be down under for the first time over the course of 2 weeks! Aside from that, my adoration for DragWorld cannot be contained so I am COUNTING. DOWN. I may be in the wrong, but I consider conventions to be the same as festivals in regards to how and why they are successful! On that note, I find festivals are successful because they thrive on the premise of togetherness and uniting over a specific motif or theme which bonds or links so many different walks of life in one place.
Hannah Montgomery: Do you have a life motto or ethic that you abide by?
BibleGirl: I have two very crucial ideologies to live by— the first is a Portuguese proverb I learned while touring in Brazil back in 2015, ‘se me atacar eu vou atacar,’ which translates to ‘you attack me, I attack you’! My ultimate mantra has remained the same for years…I’M QUITTING DRAG!
Dragworld UK takes place in London on 18 & 19 August. You can purchase your tickets here.
