Review: BA-HA, Birmingham

Frankie & Becky, co-founders of the vegan business BA-HA, based at Churchills in The Mailbox, Birmingham, warmly welcomed the WhatsOn team to review some of their amazing dishes on the vegan menu.
One of our reviewers cleaned his plates within minutes – enough said!

To start we tried a selection of jack fruit balls, chilli cheese bites and a cauliflower prepared with freshly chopped spring onions, chilli, lime and tamarind coating which was absolutely mouth watering. We all were left wanting more and could not stop dipping into the array of tasty sauces.
Frankie was lovely enough to educate us on the plant-based dishes, giving us all an interesting insight into how the food was prepared, where the produce came from and the health benefits associated with being vegan nowadays. It was great to try something so different, flavoursome, yet healthy.

The mains were certainly a crowd pleaser – all of the options on the menu went down a storm. First up was the King Kentucky Burger – double stacked King oyster in a delicious crispy Kentucky batter with homemade garlic mayo and mixed leaves in a soft brioche style bun accompanied with fresh hand cut seasoned chips. Both reviewers, Vince and Mo cleaned their plates up in no time and were left totally satisfied.
Next up was the F+B Lasagna tasted by Samuel and Surinder – a homemade lasagna dish packed with locally sourced veg, pasta layers and homemade marinara cheese sauce topped with a special cashew parmesan and chive layer for that extra little layer of flavour and texture.

I tried the bish and chips – yes, BISH not fish! At first, I was a little skeptical however it is a bit like marmite, you either like it or you don’t but it is certainly worth a try! If you like experimenting with new flavours and textures then this is one to go for. This was a beer battered banana blossom delicately marinated with the flavours of the sea. The bish was served with fresh hand cut seasoned chips, mint mushy peas and a homemade tartare sauce full of texture and lots of lemon.

Finally, the last main that we were able to taste was the mushroom and spinach rigatoni indulged by Pam – smothered in a rich creamy garlic and white wine sauce, pan fried mushroom and wilted spinach topped with a cashew and herb parmesan. I think it was fair to say that we could not fault BA-HA and would hands down recommend this as one of the BEST vegan eateries that Birmingham has seen so far.

Get yourselves over to the Mailbox and wander into Churchill’s bar to try some of BA-HA’s vegan delights. You will not be disappointed!
