Easy Quarantine Cooking

By Tara Pilkington

Looking for easy recipes to use up all of the food from the back of your kitchen cupboard? Social Media is here to help.

Since officially going into a state lockdown on 31 March to reduce the spread of the coronavirus, the UK public have been urged to stay at home and only leave if they are a key worker, for one form of exercise a day, for any medical needs and shopping for basic necessities as infrequently as possible.

As a result of these measures, the UK public have been looking to social media for help to ensure that none of their food goes to waste while they are between shops.

To help inspire delicious meals from assorted products that anyone can find in their kitchen, chefs Jack Monroe and Tom Kerridge have taken to Twitter to advise people on simple and delicious meals by creating the hashtags #JackMonroesLockdownLarder and uploading videos to YouTube with a series called ‘Lock Down Dinners’.

In her new Metro collum, also called Jack Monroe’s Lockdown Larder, Jack said;
“Since I started asking people what was in their cupboards recently, as a way of helping to minimise the need to leave the house, and to offer reassurance and advice to those who may be wondering how to use what they have during a period of sporadic food shortages, some of the same things have come up again and again.”

Having already posted easy recipes for what to do with a tin of sardines, how to bake bread without yeast or bread flour and what to do with a jar of chutney that you have in the back of your cupboard, Jack is helping households make tasty meals with limited ingredients!

FROM Monday 13 April, you will also find Jack on a new BBC One show, Daily Kitchen, from 10AM – 11AM alongside chef Matt Tebbutt.
