Downing Street says “No action is off the table” to stop Super League

Downing Street has said that “No action is off the table” as it seeks to put a stop to the proposed European Super League. Frankie Rudland reports.

This came after the PM met with representatives from the Premier League and the FA to discuss the concept, which has rapidly gained traction over the past couple of days.

The 12 founding members have faced fierce backlash after releasing statements outlining their plans to break away from mainstream football, with protesters even gathering outside Anfield last night as Liverpool were held to a 1-1 draw by Leeds.

Downing Street added that the government will take “whatever action necessary” to halt the move, with the PM reportedly stating that he “will not stand by while a small handful of owners create a closed shop”.

Governing bodies and the founding clubs are now gearing up for an intense legal battle, with the president of Uefa, Aleksander Ceferin, warning players who play for teams in the ESL that they would be “banned from the World Cup and the Euros”.

But as reported earlier today by the BBC, lawyers for the ESL have written a letter to both Uefa and Fifa stating that they have filed for injunctions against such bans, saying that they consider them to be “unlawful”.
