‘Do not resuscitate’ order placed on Care home residents

The Health officials in the UK have placed a blanket ‘Do Not Resuscitate’ order on all care home residents. This has resulted in a major backlash from Labour and other charitable organizations demanding explanations from the government.

Care homes around the UK have seen the most outbreaks of Covid-19 in the last few months resulting in thousands of death. Research by the Queen’s Nursing Institute has found out that elderly people, autistic adults, and people with learning abilities are being abandoned.

The NHR managers then imposed a DNR on all the residents of health care and nursing homes in the UK. However, the newly imposed rule was not taken after considering the staff, residents, and their family’s opinions into account. Representatives from the Royal College of Nursing and the British Medical Association have stated that it is essential to discuss the issue of DNR orders with the patient’s families.

Moreover, reports have shown that Elderly patients are being forced to sign these DNR forms. There have also been reports of autistic and disabled people not being allowed to take COVID-19 tests.

Shadow health minister, Jonathan Ashworth has called out Boris Johnson over his atrocious failure in protecting the home care residents throughout this pandemic. According to Ashworth, Boris has led thousands of staff exposed to the new virus by imposing orders which allow Covid-19 to spread more actively around the nursing homes.

Winter is approaching and there are high chances for the new virus to resurge. The NHS Public co-chairman, Dr. John Puntis said that the government must take the responsibility to ensure proper health care and access to fair medical treatments of those in health and nursing homes. As of now, the discriminatory attitudes are betraying the disadvantaged and elderly people. Families are left with tragic consequences and loss of life.
