Covid-19 Update: Many countries moving towards hard lockdown

Covid-19 cases are on the rise again as the world is hit by the third wave of coronavirus. Many countries are moving towards strict lockdown, Rehnuma reports.

Here is the latest development of Covid-19 cases around the world:

  • India recorded 103,558 new Covid cases on Monday, the country’s highest one-day figure. India’s total corona cases tally is now 12.59 million. The country saw 478 new deaths yesterday, raising the total death toll to 165,101.
  • On Sunday, Russia announced 8,817 new COVID-19 cases, including 1,901 in Moscow, bringing the total number to 4,580,894 since the pandemic started.
  • The coronavirus caused 78 deaths in Greece; the largest number of deaths recorded in a single day this year.
  • With 294 deaths registered on Saturday, Peru has set a new high for coronavirus deaths.
  • Official estimates show that the number of Covid deaths in the UK has dropped to its lowest since mid-September as more than five million people have now received both vaccine doses. Though a total of 3,423 infections have been reported in the last 24 hours, only 10 deaths occurred.
  • Due to the rise in cases, Maharashtra, India’s wealthiest state, will place a strict weekend lockdown and a night curfew from Monday on its 110 million residents, authorities declared on Sunday.
  • Bangladesh government has declared a seven-day strict lockdown from Monday, with all non-essential shopping and transportation facilities shut down. On Sunday, 7,087 new cases were registered, the most since the outbreak began, bringing the total number of cases to 640,000.
  • The Philippines, Pakistan, Kenya, and Bangladesh are to be added to England’s “red list” of countries from which almost all travel is banned, as covid cases are on the rise in those countries.
  • From mid-April, England’s prime minister Boris Johnson plans to begin nine “vaccine passport” pilots, including three football showpieces at Wembley Stadium and four night-time entertainment trials in Liverpool.
  • The prohibitions on land and sea travel to Spain that were scheduled to expire this weekend have been extended until April 15.
  • In Kuwait, high class people are given priority for vaccination, while foreign nationals, who make up 70% of the population, are having difficulty getting vaccines.
  • Colombia is planning to implement curfews based on regional intensive care unit occupancy rate. The government has also implemented weekend curfews and issued travel warnings for the Easter holiday.
  • In the last 24 hours, more than 4 million doses of the coronavirus vaccine have been administered in the US, a record high.
  • Pakistan is providing free vaccines to healthcare staff and those above the age of 50, as it has recently approved commercial supply imports for the general public.
  • The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said on Twitter that people who have been completely vaccinated can assemble for Easter celebration on Sunday, both indoors and without masks.
