Climate Failure Violates Human Rights: Belgian Court Rules

By blaming the current government authorities, a Brussels court has ruled that the current climate failure of Belgium violates human rights. Dipto Paul Reports.

The court also asked the reason behind not taking the climate emergency seriously.

On Thursday, the court declared that the Belgium state had committed an offense under Belgian civil law and breached the European convention on human rights.

According to the court, “by not taking all “necessary measures” to prevent the “detrimental” effects of climate change, Belgian authorities had breached the right to life (article 2) and the right to respect for private and family life (article 8).”

By making the 58000 citizens accuser, the court is praised by everyone including Klimaatzaak, the NGO who filled the case first.

Serge de Gheldere, the chairman of Klimaatzaak said, “For the first time it is recognized that we are in direct, personal, and real danger.”

For making 58000 citizens as accusers, Carole Billiet a lawyer who acted for the campaigners said, “The court accepts that these [58,000] people have a direct and personal interest.”

Different climate activists over the world also marked the judgment as historic.

Netherlands, Germany, and France also faced similar kinds of allegations for inadequate responses to the climate crisis or failing to keep their promises.
