Climate Action: Joe Biden to reveal US emissions pledge

The President of the USA has called 40 world leaders to join him in combating climate crisis. Anika Khan reports.

Joe Biden sets out his core plans for tackling the climate crisis earlier this week. He called on all the world’s major economies to join him in bold action to slash greenhouse gas emissions in the next 10 years.

He has made this one of his top administration’s top priorities since he came in position. He stated that Clean growth is the route for the US to rebound from the Coronavirus crisis.

He took to Twitter and said:

Joe Biden and John Kerry aim to seek new commitments from the world’s biggest carbon emitters to fulfill their 2015 Paris agreement through the virtual summit.

Furthermore, the world waits to see Joe Biden unveil the national plan to cut green gas emissions over the next 10 years. If the plan is bold enough and other countries follow the suit, the world has a possibility to meet the Paris goals by 2030.

In 2015, 196 major parties came together under the Paris Agreement to transform their development trajectories so that they set the world on a course towards sustainable development and increase the ability to adapt to the adverse impacts of climate change. They have agreed to work with a pathway towards low greenhouse gas emissions and climate-resilient development.

A former UN Climate chief who was present at the Agreement, Christina Figures said, “everyone needs to do better NDCs. We have to increase ambition. New updates are coming out to climate science showing we are perilously close to tipping points. We have to meet the scale of that challenge, and we have to start the descent. We can no longer be on the path of increasing emissions.”

The UN reports revealed that if they continue with their current NDCs, it will lead to a reduction in emission of just 1% by 2030. Bolder actions need to taken to combat the climate crisis before it is too late.
