The devastating typhoon Lekima that made landfall in China in the early hours of Saturday, has caused heavy torrential rainfall to sweep across eastern China.
The rainfall caused disastrous floods which caused several buildings and monuments to collapse and be swept away in the gushing stream.
Chinese officials have stated that approximately five million people have been affected by Lekima in the Zhenjiang province of eastern China and around 250,000 residents have been evacuated in Shanghai (as reported by the BBC). Death tolls have reached up to 49 according to the Chinese news agency Xinhua with a large number of people who are still missing.
This disaster has caused a massive economic loss of at least 26 billion yuan (USD 3.7 billion). Xinhua also reported that the rainfall recorded in the Shandong province had broken the record of the last largest rain which occurred in 1952.
