The 99-year-old Second World War veteran has successfully raised millions for the NHS after aiming to walk 100 laps of his garden before his 100th Birthday on 30 April.

Captain Tom Moore, a 99-year-old war veteran, has raised millions for the NHS after setting himself the challenge of walking 100 laps around his garden by 30 April, with the current figure standing at over £12 million and counting!

This morning, the veteran finished his final four laps and has become the single biggest fundraiser in history on the JustGiving online crowdfunding platform.

After initially only aiming to raise just £1,000 for 100 laps, he has said that he will keep talking as long as the public continues to donate to the fund which is raising money for the NHS and key workers who are currently on the frontlines of the coronavirus pandemic.

Speaking to Good Morning Britain before completing his 100 laps, Captain Tom and his daughter Hannah Ingram-Moore said that the amount of money that has so far been raised has been unbelievable. He also thanked the NHS who cared for his wife, Pamela, before her death in 2016.

His daughter Hannah also said,

“For me, I think that we, the British public, have been going through some really dark times and we can all come together for a common purpose…We are an incredible nation of people and we should be so proud of ourselves.”

Health secretary Matt Hancock this morning described the veteran as ‘an inspiration to us all’ and said,

I saw the video a little while ago, a few days ago, and I was just inspired. ‘And then I’ve been following him since, as the amount he has raised has gone up and up and up. ‘Captain Tom, he has served his country in the past and he’s serving his country now, both raising that money for the NHS, for which I know NHS charities are going to be incredibly proud and grateful, but also cheering us all up.”
