PM Boris Johnson once vowed that the UK would leave the EU by the 31st of October. It was another promise he couldn’t fulfill and Tory MP Mark Francois warned of the dire consequences, “I think if we don’t leave on 31st of October, this country will explode” he once told Politics Live.
Now this spooky day has rolled around, many Twitter-ers are poking fun at his melodramatic statement. Francois is a staunch Brexiteer and deputy chairman of the Brexit-supporting European Research Group (ERG), who’s scaremongering opened him up to mockery.
#BritainHasExploded has been trending for the entire day with over 15,000 mentions. Most posts include mundane or typical photos with fittingly hyperbolic captions.
Another one of Boris’ aides warned of “violent popular uprising” if the Brexit arrangements were delayed or reversed. This too has been made the punchline of jokes with the hashtag #BrexitRiots, which is trending in a way that’s basically interchangeable with #BritainHasExploded.
These hashtags are amuning takes on an otherwise tiresome situation and do well to prove that even with the Brexit debacle, Britain will always have it’s dry, sarcastic sense of humour. Stay safe… find shelter… because #BritainHasExploded (but not really).
#BritainHasExploded : The UK hasn’t left the EU by PM Johnson’s promised date and chaos has ensued (but not really)
